📋 WHS Regulations 2012

Under the Harmonised WHS Regulations 2012, inspection, testing and tagging of portable electrical appliances in a Hostile Environment is mandatory. A documented risk assessment applies for items in a Non-Hostile Environment.

Visual Testing Process

Prior to electrical testing, ATS technicians conduct a comprehensive visual inspection of:

  • Flexible supply cord
  • Plug condition
  • Appliance body and housing
  • Socket and outlet condition
  • Covers and guards — checked to ensure they are properly attached
  • Class II appliances — checked for deep engraving that may impact insulation

Electrical Tests Conducted

The following electrical tests are required under AS/NZS 3760:2010:

🔬
Insulation Resistance
Tests for degraded insulation that could cause shock or fire
Leakage Current
Identifies dangerous current escaping the appliance
🔄
Polarity
Confirms correct wiring orientation
🌍
Earth Resistance
Verifies the protective earth connection is intact

Note: Under the Harmonised WHS Regulations 2012, testing and tagging of portable electrical appliances in a Hostile Environment has become mandatory with a documented risk assessment applicable for Non-Hostile Environments.
